My name’s Emily, I’m from Brisbane, Australia. I’m a student of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (C.B.T) in The School Of Natural Health Sciences. I am recovering from Severe Social Anxiety Disorder myself, not just S.A.D but Severe S.A.D so I have very intimate experience and knowledge of what Social Anxiety is like.
What has helped me is learning about and overcoming my unhelpful thoughts and beliefs. This is what I’m still doing, and sharing with you! on twitter, youtube, facebook, & this website!
I’m telling you to stop telling yourself you can’t get better because I know you can. The starting point of my recovery was to JUST BELIEVE I could get completely better, even though I didn’t know HOW. So please believe you can overcome S.A as much as you’d like!
I’m motivated to help people with S.A because I have experienced the incredible pain it brings many times in my life. I don’t want you going through this pain if I can help in some way!
S.A.D has been so much of my life. Isolation, depression, loneliness, hopelessness, panic attacks, terror & dread to the point of feeling physically sick, incredibly low self esteem.
I have improved, am still improving, and I’m a different person to a few years ago.
What’s Social Anxiety?
Anxiety to me means regular & often fear & worry.
So Social Anxiety means Fear & Worry that happens regularly & often about the Social part of their life.
And Social Anxiety Disorder?
I think Disorder means Social Anxiety out of order… your life hobbies, education, or earning of an income being disabled.
With my knowledge, Social Anxiety Disorder is the fear of social situations, certain people, & negative thoughts about them-self from other people. This is accompanied by deep, irrational & damaging beliefs in their mind.
People with S.A.D hide their real self &/or avoid certain people & social situations.
Effects:
Painful Emotional difficulty with possible physical symptoms during, or avoidance of:
- School
- University
- Work
- Being the Center Of Attention with anything
- Giving Speeches
- Introductions
- Talking About Them-Self
- Any Social Get-Togethers or Social Gatherings any place real or virtual (Shops, Parties, Using the phone, Internet Chatrooms etc)
Avoidance is because of intense emotional difficulty & unwell physical symptoms.
People with S.A.D can’t escape their fear since it includes the fear of other peoples negative thoughts & judgments about them-self, which could be happenning at any time. Since they cannot escape their fear day or night, imagine the distress they can experience.
Possible Consequences:
- Loss of living up to potential in life
- Lack of participation
- Unable to ask questions
- Unable to act on opportunities
- Not having any or many friends
- Difficulty with or no relationship/s
- Not reaching their potential in, or lack of, job / career.
This disability can lead to a lower quality of life.
People with S.A.D often have Depression.
Very Low Self Esteem seems to be a large part of S.A.D.
At the lowest point many people with S.A.D think of Suicide. I hear people describe the experience of S.A.D as “hell” & I have described the low points as “emotional torture”.
Symptoms they may get in social situations / When thinking they have been negatively thought about by another person:
- Blushing
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Shaking
- Trembling
-
- Inability to speak
- Stuttering
- Stumbling with words or sentences
- Going cold or feeling cold
- Going Pale
-
- Tense body
- Tight throat
- Tight chest
- Feeling or being paralyzed and unable to move, their whole body, or parts of their body
- Short, shallow breathing
-
- Thumping, fast beating heart
- De-realization
- Sudden overwhelming “Waves” of shock and paralysis through their body
- Uncontrollable teariness or crying
- Having a Panic attack
-
- Memory Loss / Mind Blank
- Falling or Tripping more easily
- Dropping things more easily
-
The common emotions that people with [generalized] S.A.D may be so used to it just feels like “how I normally feel” :
- Anxiety
- Fear
- Dread
- Panic
- Sadness
- Depression
- Embarrassment
- Humiliation
- Shame
- Guilt
- Anger
- Jealousy and Envy
And perhaps… at least some times, feelings that don’t have a name. Like,
“Unbearably Worthless, Ashamed, Broken, Destroyed, and Humiliated”
Other Descriptions of S.A.D:
suffocated, trapped, dead, beaten, suppressed, like they are trapped inside them-self, like their body is a cage or a prison, hopelessness, helplessness, paralyzed, stuck
Since their fear is of negative thoughts about them-self from other people, people with S.A.D are THE EXPERTS of hiding their S.A from others! This can lead to problems. Some people may not believe they are ill, or as ill as they are. Their self esteem may then worsen as they believe that they are a flawed, terrible (insert many degrading self-insults) person instead of it being an illness… or suffer in silence.
